Advancing personalised cancer care through radiotheranostics
THE CHALLENGE
Cancer care is increasingly moving towards personalised medicine, where treatments are tailored to the specific characteristics of each patient and disease. However, many advanced cancer therapies still face significant barriers, including limited access to innovative treatments, fragmented healthcare infrastructures, shortages in the supply of medical isotopes, and the need for more accurate diagnostic and monitoring tools.
Thera4Care was created to address these challenges through radiotheranostics, an innovative medical approach that combines diagnostic imaging and targeted therapy. The project aims to improve the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of complex cancers by developing more precise, safer, and more accessible theranostic solutions for patients across Europe.
STRATEGY AND SOLUTION
Thera4Care is a European research and innovation project funded by the Innovative Health Initiative Joint Undertaking (IHI JU) under Horizon Europe. The initiative brings together leading universities, hospitals, industry partners, SMEs, and scientific organisations to create a European ecosystem for radiotheranostics.
The project focuses on developing and validating new diagnostic and therapeutic solutions for solid tumours, including ovarian cancer, glioblastoma, pancreatic cancer, sarcoma, and neuroendocrine tumours. To achieve this, Thera4Care integrates preclinical research, clinical trials, advanced imaging technologies, dosimetry, artificial intelligence, and training activities.
A major objective of the project is to create a scalable and sustainable infrastructure capable of supporting the production, distribution, and clinical adoption of theranostic technologies throughout Europe. Artificial intelligence and data-driven approaches play a key role in supporting clinicians with treatment planning, patient monitoring, and personalised decision-making.
The project is organised into nine interconnected work packages covering project management, regulation, preclinical studies, supply chain and production, clinical trials, artificial intelligence for treatment monitoring, dosimetry, precision imaging, and dissemination and education.
